Jeff Moreland spent 3 years in Thailand with the Peace Corps before serving in the armed forces as a Marine during Operation Iraqui Freedom. He earned a purple heart for risking his life in an ambush in which 15 servicemen in his battalion were instantly killed. He lost both legs in a mortar attack as he defended his position against overwhelming fire-
power until air support arrived which took out the enemy with rocket launchers and heavy artillery fire. He met August Highland at a peace rally in Balboa Park in San Diego California in 2003. In 1996, Moreland earned an MFA from SDSU where he studied with Professors Harry Polk-
inhorn, Stephen-Paul Martin, Ray Federman and Larry McCaffery. It was a synchronicity that Highland and Moreland met because Highland was mentored by Polkinhorn, Martin and Federman. Jeff Moreland and his wife Carla quickly developed a personal and literary friendship with Highland and his family. August invited both of them to join the Superheroes of Humanities. Jeff and Carla work closely together and strive to make their work indistinguishable from each other. The genre in which they work is "Next-Generation Nanopoetics", a genre first adopted by members of the International Belles Lettres Federation. Jeff and Carla simplify the genre by creating short stanzas and using a multiplicity of source materials in the generation of their texts.
