Can anyone help with a poetry lesson that I am going to teach?
I am a first year teaching student in the UK, and I have to teach a lesson on poetry for a Year 2 class on Monday.
It is based on the old framework; year 2 term 2. This is the first lesson for a two week block and I was wondering how I would teach this lesson?
This is my first whole class lesson that I am going to be teaching, so I would like some thing easy for me to start off with.
But any ideas at all would be good! I cannot think of any at all, which sounds really awful, but my mind just keeps going blank.
Any help at all would be great, thanks!
What I have done is to start off by reading some funny poems to your students. Example: Shel Silverstein poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends
This will get the kids into the lesson.
Then I would have them help you write a poem on the board or overhead projector. I would start with an acrostic poem about the school or you.
This is the kind of poem where you write the name down the paper and write one word about the subject that starts with each letter in the subject. You can do more than one word if you like.
Example:
S- Student learning is Number 1
U- U always know the teachers care
P-Place of creativity and growth
E- Excellent computer Lab
R-

C
H

L
Then have the kids write one using their first name.
You could then have them share the poems if they would like.
