Where do I find out about cultural/ social events in NYC?

I live in Connecticut, and here we have a free newspaper called the Advocate that advertizes cool little seminars, poetry readings, forums, wine tastings, art exhibits, and stuff like that. Now my girlfriend and I are interested in seeing what NYC has to offer, since it’s just 2 hours away.

Does New York City have some sort of magazine or directory that lists cool little events like those? I tried Google and Yahoo, and it wasn’t too informative (though it did lead us to a Blue Man Group showing at Astor Theatre that was wicked cool!).

Any such magazine or newsletter in existence?

Try http://www.villagevoice.com and http://www.timeoutny.com

The Voice has been free in New York for decades and has a comprehensive listing of events all over the boroughs. Time Out NY is newer and the free website doesn’t list as much as their magazine, for which you have to have a paid subscription, but you can still find loads of things to do in it. Also is http://www.manhattanusersguide.com/ which doesn’t have a print issue, but may offer some interesting options.

Also try http://www.newyorkmetro.com/ …the website for New York Magazine. Every year they list the best of everything in New York (things like best shopping, best mac and cheese, best theatres, etc.) and it’s all available on the website.
