Do you have Family traditions and do you read poetry to your children?
I wasn’t even born but my *Father* used to read to my brothers at bedtime when they were little (so much for “modern man”!) and later on too he read *with* them.
It must have stuck because they can both recite Kipling’s “If” by heart to this day.
I can’t remember my Father ever reading to me – but I remember that poem.
I read it to all of my boys from when they were tiny and they just loved the word sounds even if they didn’t understand it yet but I am sure that they took it in.
I do the same with my grandsons when they stay here and they love it too.
The thing is – I believe every word of it and maybe that comes through in my reading – I hope so!
Have you got Family traditions/poems?
http://www.kipling.org.uk/poems_if.htm
I do read all kinda of things to the kids, including poetry… I also write poetry and i encourage them to write as well.
I wrote this for my dying gram
My Grandma
To The Most wonderful Grandmother in the world. I love you
My Grandma, I can say is truly one of a kind.
She has the warmest heart you will ever find.
She was there for me always, good or bad.
She is the best friend that I have ever had.
I have many great memories which I hold so dear.
I never had to explain, be sorry or even have fear.
No matter what happened I knew she was there.
I Guess that’s why I feel Cancer just isn’t fair.
You cheered everyone up when they were feeling blue.
It was simply impossible not to love you.
You are the most amazing woman that I know.
Thank you for everything now, and so long ago.
I just want you to know How much I love you.
I know how much love you have for me too.
Saying good bye is just not easy for me to do.
But when its time part of my heart goes with you.
And this one for her funeral
Good bye Gram
My Grandma lost her battle to cancer fighting to the end.
Even with treatments its too strong for her body to mend.
I understand she was old & her life was long and full.
Now her spirit is free …. heart, body, mind, and her soul.
Saying good bye to a loved one is hard for one to do.
However asking for them to stay would be selfish too.
Her final days weren’t good ones it was so easy to see.
I was just thankful that in the end she still knew me.
Each day she looked a little worse and was so very sad.
she had lost alot of weight her skin looked pretty bad.
She knew she was getting weaker and that she would die.
Her eyes were dull and glassy as she looked to the sky.
I knew it was happening & I knew it would be tough.
I got the news you were gone It was still pretty rough.
You cant be truly ready to let go of someone you love.
I know your in a better place watching us from above.
I cant promise I wont shed alot of tears over of you.
I know that is not something your expecting me to do.
I wish I had one more time I could feel your touch.
Good bye Grandma I hope you know I love you so much.
