What is ‘voice’ in poetry?
Reading so many of the poems posted here, most of which are apparently by young women trying to deal with things that happen every day, I can almost imagine they are written by the same person. What is it in the phrasing and the words that gives one poet a different voice from another?
A lot of time when people are starting out they don’t have a distinct “voice” in their work. However, over time if they are writing from a place of honesty the work they produce will be shaded with their own peculiar perspective. At that point you could have someone read you a passage and you would know that it was Yeats, Frost, Eliot, Plath, Sexton, or in broader literature-Fitzgerald, Faulkner, etc, etc, etc.
Voice is something that is developed over time. When I look at my early work it was too distant, too vague, it didn’t sound like me. I’m getting to the point now that while there is still room for improvement the work sounds like me. It is my voice. Again though I think it is more than the words or the phrasing, I think it is when the writer begins to trust themselves and says the words that matter to them. Voice is about believing that YOU specifically have the right to say something.
